A Beginner's Guide to Filming Wildlife on a Safari
There’s only one thing that beats coming home from a safari with wild tales of spotting the Big Five – coming home with footage of it. Getting up close and personal with wild animals in their natural habitat can be exhilarating, which means it comes as no surprise that those particular videos are some of the most popular.
With that in mind, we’ve put together the ultimate beginners guide to filming wildlife on a safari, with everything you need to know. Ready to get wild?
1 - Consider using a zoom lens
As close as you may get, sometimes you’ll need a helping hand from your trusty zoom lens to get that perfect shot of a snoozing lion. You’ll often find that the majority of the action is within 200-400mm away, so opt for a 100-400mm or 200-500mm lens.
If using a mobile, a zoom lens attachment could prove useful to ensure your video quality remains high. The Moment Anamorphic lens is a good option for budding filmmakers, with its lightweight body and firm locking system, making sure it stays in place no matter how bumpy the road.

2 - Talk to your guides
They’re the experts. Make the most of the knowledge and experience your guide has and let them know what kind of shots you’re hoping to get. While they can’t promise you’ll catch a thrilling hunt or a tender moment between mother and calf, they’ll do what they can to keep bumpiness to a minimum (where possible), manoeuvre the vehicle for a clear line of sight and help you get the shot.

3 - Prepare for the environment
Be prepared to return from your travels covered in dust. While easily washed off of clothing, getting it out of the nooks and crannies of your equipment can prove a much greater challenge. Remember to keep your lens cap on when you’re not shooting, and be extra careful when changing lenses over as the fine dust can get trapped.
4 - Have a Plan B in place
A day out on safari means long hours, often under the hot sun. Despite best efforts, you may find your camera resting as a picture-perfect moment flies by. Ensure you catch everything by mounting a GoPro to your jeep – as long as your guide says okay (just watch out for any curious creatures you may come across).
5 - Get equipment insurance
It’s a jungle out there.
