November 2022: A Month in Review

From a heroic rescue from man’s best friend, the jarring scene where Qatar police clashed with Brazilian world cup fans over a state flag, to the shocking moment a diver narrowly misses a shark attack.

November has been a month of high powered, adrenaline-fueled videos likely to leave you at the edge of your seat, we know that’s how our buyers felt.

We’ve broken down the month’s most popular videos, and in the spirit of looking forward, identify the key video opportunities our filmers can make the most of.

Near Miss: Diver vs Shark

Ocean Ramsey, a diver and conservation biologist, narrowly misses an attack by a tiger shark (also known as Queen Nikki to those in the conservation community) in an anxiety-inducing clip.

Filmed in Hawaii, the video shows Ramsey taking a peek into the water before scrambling to make her way up the steps as the tiger shark launches itself at her flippers.

The video then takes an unexpectedly light-hearted turn as Ramsey, who has been diving with Queen Nikki for over 18 years, laughs off the encounter and takes to the water again.

Buyers loved the mix of pacing used in the video, mixing the fast-paced shot of the diver scrambling to move back with the slow motion of the shark lurching out of the water created an invigorating watch.

Key Learning:

When capturing a near miss moment, whether you’re out on the open waters or the open road, why not try playing with the pacing of your video - using slow motion to bring attention to the key moments audiences might find more nail-biting.

Everyday Heroes: Dog vs Bull

German Shepherd, Snow, took her ‘Man’s Best Friend’ title to heart in another of this month’s most popular videos when she saved the family’s young toddler from a bull attack.

The clip, caught on the family’s CCTV, shows the moment the pooch runs at the bull as it charges the child, scaring it away before anyone else had caught on to the impending danger.

Unsurprisingly, the shot took buyers by storm. Short but sweet, the clip combines the excitement of the animal’s face-off with a touching moment between father and son into an emotional rollercoaster of a clip.

Key Learning:

Make the most of the unexpected by capturing content on static long-term filming devices like personal CCTV cameras, dashcams or doorbell cams. These are usually searched for by buyers with key productions in mind, which could mean a higher price-point for your videos.

On-The-Ground: World Cup 2022

One of the most controversial World Cups in history, it’s no surprise that among fan reactions and worldwide celebrations, on-the-ground clips are among the most popular with buyers and audiences alike with everyone wanting to catch a glimpse of what it's like.

Unfortunately, this month’s most viewed World Cup clip did just that, as audiences watched the moment conservative guards appeared to have mistaken a Brazilian fan’s flag for the colourful gay rainbow.

The flag in question was actually of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco, which featured a rainbow arc, along with a star, a sun, and a red cross. Authorities, under orders to stop any and all gay propaganda (a crime punishable by death  in the country) allegedly tried to confiscate the flag and when the fans tried to film the incident, also tried to confiscate the phone.
