September 2022: A Month in Review
A singing husky, the death of a monarch and a rare optical phenomenon - our filmers captured it all in September, but what can we learn from the videos that really caught buyers attention?
In the first of our new monthly series, we dive into the key takeaways from some of the best-performing videos and categories, to help you unlock your earning potential.
CATEGORIES
Wild Animals
Buyers took a walk on the wild side this month, with particular interest in all things animal kingdom. Our category ‘Wild World’ saw a 34% increase in searches, with penguins, lions and sharks among the most sought-after.
At the very top in September was filmer Adam Harnett’s incredible video of a whale shark floating near a tourist boat on the Ningaloo Reef off the west coast of Australia. The footage played with perspective by capturing the moment from both above and below the water, and helped catch the interest of potential buyers by taking a different approach to the camera angle of an underwater shot.
Weather
Climate change means that we’re seeing more storms, floods and extreme weather events globally. While these events are usually the most searched-for topics with Newsflare buyers, especially with broadcasters like CNN, NBC and the BBC, once in a while a weather event of more positive nature is spotlighted.
In September, this was filmer Rich Cruse’s stunning footage of a rare optical phenomenon known as Pilot’s Glory, captured while flying over Portland, Oregon, where a full circular rainbow is seen surrounding the shadow of the aircraft cast on the clouds below.
Key takeaway: Play with perspective
When uploading to a popular category, try playing with the perspective and camera angle to tell a unique story.
VIDEOS
Our filmers captured moments from around the world in September, discover some of the best below…
The Queen’s Death, United Kingdom
Queen Elizabeth’s death and funeral was one of the most closely followed and watched events ever broadcast. Videos from around the world were uploaded to Newsflare, but perhaps one of the most memorable was the moment filmer BlackHawk caught a rainbow forming over the crowds outside of Buckingham Palace.
The video, picked up by buyers around the world, was immensely popular and the quick and efficient manner in which it was uploaded to Newsflare helped the filmer get his video in front of buyers first.
Key takeaway: Timeliness is key
Some videos' saleability relies on the timeliness of the upload. News buyers want video as close to the time it's happening as possible, so upload as soon as you can. Or why not upload while you’re still there?
A Singing Husky, California, USA
While not quite as world-impacting as the death of a monarch, Freya the Husky took the internet by storm this month with her vocal skills. Captured by filmer, shampaws, the hilarious (and loud) grooming session was the perfect mix of cute and funny – a killer video combination.
Key takeaway: Consider the reaction
If a video of your pet has evoked a strong reaction from you, and the people around you, it’ll likely have the same effect on viewers and buyers alike. Getting a reaction from the viewer is key to a sellable video.
