What Does Commercial Consent Mean?

So you’ve uploaded a video, and a buyer is interested, great! Depending on the buyer, you may have received a message from the Newsflare team asking for commercial consent, but, what exactly does that mean?

So, first up – what exactly is commercial consent?

When a brand, agency or production company is interested in buying your video for use in a campaign or TV show, they may require commercial consent. This means that anyone who appears in your video has given permission for their face or likeness to be used.

For example, you’ve shot a heartwarming video of a family member unwrapping their Christmas morning present.

An agency now wants to use it for their upcoming Christmas campaign, in order to do so, they ask for us to confirm the family member in the video is okay with it.

We then reach out to you, the filmer, to request contact details for that family member to check with them that they are happy for the video to be used.

Once they’ve given us their approval, we can let the client know that they can go ahead and purchase the video with consent. The faster we get the approval, the more likely it is your video will sell.

What happens if the person in the video doesn't give consent?

Unfortunately, if the person in question does not give permission for the video featuring them to be used, it’s likely the buyer won’t buy the video.

What if the person in the video is under 18?

Any under 18-year-olds featured would need permission from their parent or guardian. We cannot get commercial consent directly from individuals under 18.

It's good to note that not all your videos will need commercial consent – we’ll let you know if and when it’s needed, so no need to worry about it just yet!

If you have any questions, please contact us by submitting a request.
