How can harnessing the power of UGC give a voice to climate change

As the planet gets warmer, the population gets bigger, and the pressure on our planet increases, protecting our earth and pushing back on climate change has become a high priority for humanity. With Greenpeace Day just around the corner, let’s take a step back and understand the impact that UGC has on documenting and advocating for climate change.

Witnesses to a harsh reality

One of the most appealing aspects of Newsflare’s user-generated-content is that it involves real people, giving real opinions and filming global events as and when they happen. In order to combat climate change, people need to continue to be educated about the issue - and what better way to do so than with captivating UGC. Everyday individuals who witness the effects of climate change can now document it, making it accessible and emphasising the reality of its impact on people’s day to day lives.

The authenticity of UGC means that the often shocking and dramatic climate change-related UGC is taken seriously, which subsequently has a strong impact on those who watch it. Viewers often put themselves in the shoes of the filmer, thinking about what they would do and how they would react if they were in the same situation. This viewing behaviour holds a huge amount of importance when it comes to climate change, as no one wants to experience or be affected by the worst of it.

Holding people accountable

When it comes to our environment and the destruction of it, a lot of importance lies in holding world leaders and large corporations accountable for their actions and contributions. Sharing up-close footage of global warming, from major disasters through to everyday events, puts pressure on the world’s decision-makers to take meaningful steps in addressing and acting on climate change. UGC can also show the world the action that is being taken, whether that’s by someone in power or everyday citizens. From huge city protests to coverage of climate change summits and conferences, UGC can bring hope and motivation as well as pointing out what needs to be done.

Looking to the future

By showcasing the reality of climate change across the globe and highlighting the actions that need to be taken to change the course of the world’s future with UGC, the global issue becomes a personal and collective mission for change. As more and more people use video to emphasise the urgency for action, the potential for positive change becomes within our reach.
