Video Referral: Tipping

What is Tipping?

Tipping is a Newsflare referral scheme that allows registered Newsflare members to send us, or “tip” videos, that they think has a potential to sell on our marketplace.

How to request tipping access

Email us on tipping@newsflare.com , provide us with 3 examples of what you’ll tip. If approved, we’ll activate tipping on your Newsflare account. If you don’t have a newsflare account, simply register here. If you plan to upload your own videos, you can leave the option “I want to sell videos” selected.

How does it work?

Once tipping is activated, you’ll see a new section on your profile that will allow you to send us a tip in the form of a URL. This URL should be a link to the video that you would like to tip.

After you’ve logged into your account, you’ll see an “Add” button at the top right of your screen. Once clicked it will present a drop down as shown below.

Clicking “Submit Tip” will bring up a new box at the bottom right of your screen allowing you to enter a URL of the video you want to tip.

Newsflare will only accept tips of videos that are from the original filmer. So tipping videos from meme pages, social publishers or any form of content aggregator will not be accepted.

Once you submit a tip it will be either be accepted or rejected, rejection emails will provide some kind of reasoning as to why it didn’t pass our checks.

You’ll receive an email notification in both cases as shown below:

Once a tip is accepted, it’s sent to our in-house research team where they’ll work on getting the original filmer to register with Newsflare and upload their video.

After the on-boarding process has been completed, it’s released to our marketplace for buyers to purchase. You’ll also receive an email confirmation stating that your tipped video has been on-boarded.

How do I get paid?

Once a tipped video sells you’ll receive 10% of all sales from that video, capped at a total payout of £50 for each video. This lasts for 90 days from the day the video goes live on the platform.

There are various ways a tipped video can generated revenue:

  • Direct Sales - a contracted buyer licences a clip for a flat fee.

  • Rev-Share Partner - a buyer who may run social pages will use that content on their own social channels to generate revenue, which is then reported back to us and processed into a transaction.

  • Newsflare Studios - Newsflare has a range of social channels on Snapchat, YouTube & Facebook which generate revenue for our filmers. This works in the exact same way as a Rev-Share Partner but operates in house.

  • Production Buyers - We work with a range of production studios who licence clips for TV shows, movies and even documentaries. These clips will usually sell for much higher than Direct Sales.

Once a transaction has been processed you’ll receive an email stating how much your tip has generated.

Finding videos: TikTok

By clicking "like" on all viral videos, even those that are not original, the algorithm will provide you with a wide array of relevant content, including recent trends and viral sensations. TikTok filters your feed based on the hashtags associated with the videos you engage with as seen below.

You could take this approach one step further by only engaging with certain types of content. So if you created a TikTok account and engaged with only pet content or crazy weather videos, your feed will start to show you similar content to what you have engaged with. This is a great way to get recommend content in a certain niches.

To find specific videos, use keywords to search for trending topics requested by Newsflare or by looking at what’s trending on our website. Use the search bar and update the filters: Sorted by relevance, videos category and date posted.

The magnifying glass icon located in the top right corner allows you to search for a specific topic or TikTok user. Upon entering your specific search, you'll be presented with a list of videos related to that topic. To narrow down your search further, click on the dot icon in the top right corner.

Finding videos: Instagram

Follow popular content aggregators such as Pubity, Memezar etc these pages typically post and tag the original filmer. Once you identify the video on the filmer's page, you can tip that clip. However, refrain from tipping the video posted by one of these pages, as we're specifically seeking the original filmer and video.

Make it stand out

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

You can also take a more niche approach by following popular accounts which post a particular type of content like Pets.

These accounts tend to link back to the original pet owner which you can use to source the original video from. In this case below the page posted a video of a dog and tagged the original owner highlighted in the red circle.

There are other methods to finding videos on Instagram via the Explore feature.

Word search for specific topics: On your Instagram app, tap the magnifying icon located at the bottom left of your phone app. This will prompt you to type a keyword, such as "fails & funnies." Scroll to the top topics and swipe to the far right, where you'll find 'reels'.

What to avoid

Please refrain from tipping copyright videos, as many pages repost clips that are easily identifiable. This will include pages posting clips from TV shows, sports events or even movies. Below is a clear example of a channel taking content and reposting as their own.

You can see this channel has reposted various videos directly ripped from TikTok, these videos were most likely not their own. This is a prime example of channels reposting stolen content which we can’t work with.

Check list to keep in mind

Here are some things to think about before sending us a tip as these would result in a rejection:

  • Is this clip from a TV show, movie, music video, documentary or sports event?

  • Have you linked us a tip from a content aggregator that reposts other peoples clips?

  • Branded content, for example, branded by GoPro, Redbull or other companies?

  • State, local, county, governments or entities such as fire departments, police departments?

  • Charities or organisations like Greenpeace, World Wildlife Fund, zoos, and museums?

  • Has the clip been posted on a competitor company page or has reference back to a competitor: for example, Jukin Media, Storyful, ViralHog, BViral, Caters?

  • Is the video less than 20s? If so, we’d suggest tipping something else. The sweet spot is around 30s-3mins long!

  • Please don’t tip any videos which may fall under the following: Bullying, harassment, abuse, nudity, suicide, self injury, adult nudity, sexual activity, hate speech, violent and graphic content, animal abuse, animal neglect.

What are we looking for?

A great way to find out what types of content we are looking for is to look at our latest video briefs which are located here. These are all the hot topics our buyers love. You can click into each video breif to see what has already been submitted to give you an idea of the type of clips being uploaded.

Another method is to check what’s currently trending, these clips have been recently purchased by our clients.

Here is a list of topics to get you going!

  • Breaking news

  • Anything with a unique or interesting action

  • Extreme weather - tornadoes, floods, lightning, huge storms, massive hail, huge waves, etc

  • Natural disasters - volcanoes, landslides, earthquakes etc
