What do Copyright and Licensing mean?

And how do they work at Newsflare?

Did you shoot it? You own it. It’s as simple as that.

Copyright protects your ownership over a piece of work. Licensing is when you give permission to another party to use and/or earn money from that piece of work.

At Newsflare, when you licence with us - meaning you give us permission to use your video - you always retain ownership over the video. If you’re still wondering just how it works, read on for the answers to your most asked questions.

So, you’ve uploaded your video to Newsflare. Who owns it?

You. Always you.

When you upload your video to our website, you are simply giving Newsflare permission to licence your video to clients. We take a copy and share it with potential buyers, and then share revenue with you when they make a purchase.

No matter where your video ends up, you will remain the owner.

How does the licensing process work?

In order to make money with your video, you’ll want to licence it with a media agency. This is the best way to ensure you and your video are protected.

When you upload a video to Newsflare, and by agreeing to our T&Cs, you are giving us permission to promote your video to our client base, and to make you money by licensing it to our clients.

Essentially, you give us permission to let our clients use your video in return for a fee - you then receive 50% of the fee.

Licensing with us gives you a range of benefits, including:

  • Security. We work hard to ensure you are paid for all use of your video, and you can rest easy knowing that we will stop non-authorised video usage.

  • Exposure. We put your videos in front of a range of prestigious buyers and clients, meaning MTV, ABC, the BBC, NBC, Fox and others could pay to use your videos.

  • Transparency. We’ll notify you once a client has paid to use your video, so you can track exactly who might be using it.
